Widow’s plea for financial assistance

Judge ordered that her plea should be “looked into within a week... and disposed of on merits”

The Madras High Court Bench here has directed Madurai Collector to consider a representation made by a widow seeking financial assistance since she was reportedly finding it difficult to fend for herself and also raise her minor son ever since her husband, a daily wage labourer, died in a fire accident in their house on September 23, 2012.

Disposing of a writ petition filed by Janakiselvi, Justice M. Venugopal ordered that her plea should be “looked into within a week, from the date of receipt of the court order, and disposed of on merits (of course after providing necessary opportunity to the petitioner and others concerned, if any, by adhering to principles of natural justice) within three weeks thereafter.”

Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel R. Venkatesan contended that numerous requests made by the petitioner for financial assistance and a job on compassionate grounds did not evoke a positive response.
