Members belonging to the Retired Police Personnel’s Welfare Association have thanked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for introducing many welfare schemes for the police personnel, both serving and retired, in the State.
At a meeting held here, a number of resolutions were passed. In one of the resolutions, they sought the government to recognise the Association as it was registered in Chennai under the Societies Registration Act and also wanted the setting up of a ‘police welfare board’.
The government should consider opening educational institutions exclusively for the wards of police personnel and earmark funds for higher education. The government should extend free medical assistance to retired police personnel and other government servants. Pensioners should be provided with free bus passes as promised by the Chief Minister in her election manifesto. The members wanted the functioning of police canteen to be handed over to retired personnel who would manage them effectively. The meeting also thanked the CM for opening of seven more canteens in the State soon. For training aspirants to join the police force, centres should be opened for which resource persons from ‘Tamil Nadu Police Welfare Association’ could be drafted, they urged.
The members condemned the brutal murder of Tirupachethi sub-inspector of police Alwin Sudhan by an armed gang in Sivaganga district and extended all support to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) S. Vellai Durai for the encounter killing of the two persons, who allegedly attacked a special police team.
The meeting was presided over by K. Karmegam district president. State organising secretary M. Raja Mohammed explained the activities of the Association. Santhanam was elected as district secretary, a release said.
