As part of the programmes organised for the National Bone and Joint Day, observed on August 4, a walkathon was arranged here by the Government Rajaji Hospital in association with the Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association on Saturday.
R. Sivakumar, president of Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association, said that the objective of the walkathon was to create awareness among the public of bone and joint-related issues.
Students from Madurai Medical College, associated with GRH, took part in large numbers in the walkathon carrying placards and highlighting various aspects, including the importance of leading a healthy life, and to prevent bone and joint-related issues.
Dr. Sivakumar said it was also the objective to highlight the recent technological developments, which have made cure for many bone and joint-related diseases.
He said that this year’s theme for the National Bone and Joint Day adopted by Indian Orthopaedic Association was “One Member, One Free Surgery” and the IOA was targeting around 5,000 free surgeries.
The walkathon was inaugurated by Revenue Minister R.B. Udhayakumar and Cooperation Minister ‘Sellur’ K. Raju in the presence of Madurai Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao. Dean of GRH M.R. Vairamuthu Raju, President of Madurai Orthopaedic Surgery Academy, P.V. Pugalenthi, and other senior doctors also took part.
