Volunteers from organisations working for social causes played an important role as they helped spread awareness and implement schemes of the State government, Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan said here on Monday.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the premises of two city-based organisations — Maram Madurai, a collective of youngsters working towards planting saplings and making the city greener, and Rain Stock, a venture dedicated to introducing rainwater harvesting solutions for houses and commercial establishments. “Youngsters taking part in socially-conscious organisations and entrepreneurial ventures will have a positive impact on society. It is good to see such positive ventures at a time when most people are worried more about their academics and careers,” he said.

Speaking about planting saplings, Mr. Kathiravan directed the members of Maram Madurai to work in tandem with residential associations. “You can guide them in how to give proper care of newly-planted saplings. If protected for three years, they will bring benefits for the next 30 years,” he said.

S. Murugesan, Managing Director of Pothys, spoke of a collaboration with Maram Madurai as the company had been distributing saplings for the last five years. “We have distributed nearly 97 lakh saplings. Through partnering with this initiative, we hope to ensure that the saplings are taken care of and contribute towards making the city greener,” he said.

S.P. Vardharajan, Managing Director of PSY Engineering College, R. Sivarajah of Nativelead Foundation, and D. Stephen, Assistant Professor of Botany, American College, spoke.
