The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will begin its election campaign in the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency on April 2.

The NDA’s Madurai candidate, D. Sivamuthukumar of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), will begin the campaign from Sri Narasinga Perumal Temple near Othakadai at 4 p.m. on April 2. Party sources said DMDK president Vijayakant was likely to campaign for Mr.Sivamuthukumar on April 2 and his visit would be finalised shortly.

Originally, he was to have addressed a meeting at K. Pudur here on March 20, but his programme was cancelled in the last minute due to BJP national president Rajnath Singh’s visit to Chennai to announce the NDA alliance.

“We have already begun working in coordination with our alliance partners, especially the BJP. On Wednesday, we met Muslim leaders in Nelpettai area and Sourashtra community representatives. We called on the Bishop at Pudur and also a few prominent people of Mukkulathor community,” Mr.Sivamuthukumar told The Hindu on Thursday.

“Our party leaders have been telling Muslims and Christians that our Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi would certainly take care of minority communities, and Mr.Vijayakanth will ensure that,” he noted.

Before the campaign begins, three coordination meetings of the cadres of the NDA partners are being organised at Melur, Othakadai and Teppakulam on March 30 and 31. Mr.Vijayakant’s wife Premalatha will wind up her election campaign by addressing meetings here on April 19 and 20.
