A ruling party functionary, O.Annadurai (48), and three others have been booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of a youth, M.Rajiv Gandhi (28), near Usilampatti.

Annadurai, Usilampatti union secretary of MGR Manram, along with some others had assaulted Rajiv Gandhi following a dispute. He was admitted to the Government Hospital in Usilampatti on June 11 after he consumed poison. On Monday, he was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital here after his condition worsened. However, he succumbed at the hospital later.

Based on a complaint given by Rajiv Gandhi’s mother Angammal (65) that his son had taken the extreme step only after he was beaten up, the Uthapanaickanoor police registered a case under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code for abetting suicide.
