Complying with the government order to demolish unsafe and structurally weak buildings, Collector A. Sivagnanam has ordered officials to identify old and unusable public buildings in the district.

A committee comprising officials from the Revenue, PWD and Rural Development Department were entrusted with the task of identifying such buildings across the district.

So far, 52 structures/buildings were spotted in different panchayat unions. Unsafe anganwadi centre, Arivoli Iyakkam building, schools in panchayat, toilets, bus stop shelters and over head tanks were identified and demolished.

All the field staffs have been given equipment like bulldozers, tractors and other vehicles.

As and when the structure was pulled down, the debris were removed to safe place for disposal, the Collector said and added that the officials have been told to carry on with the exercise in other towns.

On Friday, a anganwadi centre in Narikudi panchayat union was demolished. Likewise, the anganwadi centre in Pullalakottai was also brought down after it was certified by the engineers as unsafe, a press release said.
