MADURAI
Despite sustained action being taken by officials, two fresh dengue deaths were reported here on Tuesday.
A 19-year-old girl, Varshini, daughter of Malaichamy of Kalvelipatti near Alanganallur, had complained of fever last week. Her blood was tested at the local primary health centre, and then she was referred to Government Rajaji Hospital here. However, she died at the hospital.
In another case, a woman, Velankanni, wife of Charles of Pommanampatti near Sholavandan, had fever for over a fortnight. She visited a few dispensaries in the locality, but the fever did not subside. She was referred to the GRH very late, but she died.
Stepping up the anti-dengue drive, Corporation Commissioner Aneesh Sekhar directed removal of a tea shop put up on the pathway in Goripalayam, which was found to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Town and country planning officials were told to remove encroachments. Mr. Sekhar inspected roadside tea shops, restaurants and buildings under construction near Anna bus stand and other places. A fine of ₹2,000 was imposed on a tea stall owner who had stored water in uncovered containers.
Similarly, Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao inspected tea stalls in Race Course Colony and B.B. Kulam and appealed to the public to dispose of paper cups in dumper bins.
