In a daring robbery, a three-member gang robbed an aged woman of 45 sovereigns and Rs. 10,000 at knifepoint at Naganakulam under Tallakulam police limits on Friday afternoon.

The police said that the robbers had tied the limbs of 72-year-old widow N. Vijayalakshmi, who was alone, and gagged her at her residence in Vasu Nagar before decamping with the valuables. The woman managed to untie herself and raised an alarm from her first floor residence after the trio fled.

The three persons had gone to the house on Thursday. Claiming themselves to be government officials, they had told the woman that they had come for linking details of voters’ identity card with those of Aadhaar card.

Having asked her to keep her documents ready the next day, the trio revisited her house on Friday. The woman gave the documents to them through the iron grille gate without opening it.

However, one of the two persons — the third man was standing in the ground floor — asked her to open the gate and sign some papers, the police said.

When the woman opened the gate, the duo pushed her inside, gagged her with a towel and tied her hands and legs with ropes they had brought. After removing a gold chain on her, they took the other ornaments and Rs. 10,000 from an almirah.

Tallakulam police are investigating.

Another robbery

In another incident, an armed gang robbed passengers of an autorickshaw at knifepoint on the arterial 80-Feet-Road in Anna Nagar late Thursday night.

Police said that four persons, riding two motorcycles, intercepted the autorickshaw proceeding towards Villapuram around 11 p.m. One of them smashed the windscreen of the vehicle with a machete. Another brandished a knife and threatened the passengers.

Later, the duo snatched three bags from the passengers and all the four sped away.

The police said that a pair of anklets, few dress materials and a passport were taken away by the robbers. Anna Nagar police are investigating.
