A 16-year-old Dalit girl student and a 26-year-old graduate allegedly committed suicide in two separate incidents in the district.
Police said the girl consumed poison on June 2 after she failed in Plus One examination. After she had consumed rat poison, she was admitted to Paramakudi Government Hospital and later shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, where she died on Monday.
Parthibanur police registered a case. Though Plus One students were promoted to Plus Two, some of the schools detained low-scoring students in a bid to achieve 100 per cent results in Plus Two examinations, the police said.
In another incident, S. Ramkumar (26), a B.Com (Computer Application) graduate, allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train near a check-post near here.
A track man found the body on Tuesday morning and Rameswaram Railway Police launched an investigation after registering a case.
The police said Ramkumar was in touch with his friends over phone till Monday midnight and apparently took the extreme step in the early hours of Tuesday.
The family members and relatives staged a protest at the government hospital here on Tuesday and refused to accept the body, claiming that it was a case of murder and demanded action against “those who were behind it”. The body was kept in the mortuary after post-mortem. The family members alleged that the boy, a caste Hindu, was in love with a Dalit Christian girl and he was murdered by the family members of the girl.
