Two children drown in tank near Vadipatti

Two children, cousins, met with a watery grave as they drowned in a tank near Vadipatti on Sunday.

D. Raghavan (9) and his cousin R. Charulatha (7) of Thathankulam in Nilakottai taluk had come to their grandparents’ house in Chellakulam near Vadipatti. The children, after giving tea to their grandfather Kandasamy who was grazing cattle around noon, were walking towards home when they saw a pool of water and took bath in it. Suddenly, both of them drowned in the 10-foot-deep water.

The bodies were fished out in the afternoon.

Student killed

A Plus One student, P. Kiran Pandian of Karuppayoorani, was killed and M. Harish (17) of Gomathipuram was injured after the two-wheeler they were riding dashed against the median on Lakeview Road in K.K. Nagar on Saturday night.

Ganja seized; two held

Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) sleuths seized 28 kg of ganja from two persons on Saturday night.

During a vehicle check, the NIB team, led by Inspector of Police S. Alexraj, intercepted a two-wheeler and found P. Ayyampillai of East Street in Tiruvathavur smuggling 22 kg of ganja in a bag. In another incident, acting on a tip-off, the team arrested Raja alias Periyasamy (42) of Nagari at Arittapatti bus stop. He was in possession of six kg of the narcotics substance. The two were remanded in judicial custody.

Two cases of usury Police have registered two cases under Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act against five persons in two incidents.

In the first case, P. Murugan of Kottampatti complained that he had borrowed Rs.50,000 from P. Veeranan over a period of 10 years. However, he had repaid the loan by working for him in his quarry.

But Veeranan is said to have threatened him with dire consequences if he did not repay the outstanding Rs.4 lakh.

Based on his complaint, the Kottampatti police have registered a case for using abusive language, wrong restraint and criminal intimidation.

In the other case, the police registered a case against a family of four for having threatened a woman of Therkku Theru even after she had reportedly repaid Rs.3 lakh for a loan of Rs.1 lakh. The family members were threatening her that she had to pay an additional Rs.50,000.

Chain-snatcher nabbed One of the three persons involved in a chain-snatching incident at Melur was caught by the public on Saturday.

Police said S. Meenakshi of Tiruvathavur Road was walking along Periyar Main Canal Road when a man following her snatched her two-sovereign gold chain and escaped on a two-wheeler on which two persons were waiting for him.

However, after the woman raised an alarm, bystanders chased them on two-wheelers.

When one of the persons fell down from the vehicle, he was handed over to the police, who identified him as Poovalingam of Keeraithurai. The police are on the lookout for two others.
