The reporter of a local television channel and his accomplice were arrested by the city police here on Saturday for allegedly attempting to dump ganja packets in the two-wheeler of another reporter of the same channel with the motive of getting him nabbed by the police.

According to the police, the accused reporter S. Kumaresan (42) and the complainant S. Muthukrishnan (30) had professional enmity, because of which Kumaresan colluded with his friend G. Karthikeyan (30) to get Muthukrishnan caught for peddling ganja.

Police sources said that, on Saturday afternoon, Kumaresan allegedly asked Muthukrishnan to go to Madurai railway junction to interview a senior government official.

At the railway junction, when Muthukrishnan was away from his bag, Karthikeyan, who was watching him from a distance, reportedly tried to place ganja packets inside his bag, police said.

However, Muthukrishnan noticed Karthikeyan and questioned him, resulting in a quarrel between the two. Muthukrishnan later reported the incident to Thilagar Thidal police station. On being questioned by the police, Karthikeyan allegedly confessed to conniving with Kumaresan to place ganja packets in Muthukrishnan’s bag.

Based on Muthukrishnan’s complaint, Thilagar Thidal police registered a case against the duo under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Ganja seized

The police also seized 75 grams of ganja from them. The two were later sent for judicial custody after presenting before a magistrate.
