R. Nasriya, a 21-year-old transgender, is all set to don Khaki uniform as Grade II constable as she has successfully cleared the endurance and physical fitness tests, thanks to the intervention of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.
After the court directed the Tamil Nadu uniformed services recruitment board to allow her for the tests, she took the endurance test at the Armed Reserve police ground in Madurai on August 24.
After clearing the test, running 400 metres within the stipulated time, she appeared for the physical fitness test in Madurai on Saturday and cleared the three events – long jump, shot put and 100 metres race. She obtained two stars in shot put and one star each in long jump and running, she said.
After the completion of the tests and verification of certificates, the officials told her that she would be intimated about her selection by post, she said.
“I am hopeful of donning the khaki uniform and the very thought of it is exciting,” she told The Hindu .
Life has been a struggle for the young third gender ever since she felt feminine while studying plus two four years ago. She was presently under the care of her aunt and uncle. Pursuing graduation in English literature through distance education, Nasriya had applied for Grade II constable post with lots of hopes.
She was shattered when officials refused to allow her appear for physical tests for want of identity card issued by the Tamil Nadu Third Gender Welfare Board but she would not leave. Even after moving the High Court, she badly wanted the identity card to appear for the tests.
And when she came to the Collectorate here on August 21, Collector S. Natarajan was too helpful and got her the identity card, the same day. She was certified as a transgender by a team of doctors at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, and the government headquarters hospital here.
