Many shops and commercial establishments remained closed here on Wednesday in solidarity with farmers, who demanded removal of a portion of the one-metre-high wall constructed across Kannadiyan check dam as part of the ongoing Tamirabharani–Karumaeniyar and Nambiyar river linking project. Normal life was affected.

The farmers said that the wall would affect their livelihoods.

As the wall was raised, they could not get water, they said. It should be removed immediately, they said.

The authorities made an assurance but there was no sign of any headway until now,” the farmers claimed.
