Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations had increased bus fares in city and mofussil buses, which the officials said had been done to cope up with the 'mounting loss and expenditures on payment of bonus'.

An official told PTI that it was not fare hike, but a solution for non availability of 50 paise coins. The maximum fare hike was Re. 1, the official said.

The minimum fare for travelling in ordinary buses had been increased from Rs. two to Three. In low-floor deluxe buses the minimum fare had been increased from Rs. 4.50 to Rs. 5, A. Govindan, an official of a City depot said.

In limited stop services it had been increased from Rs.3 to Rs.5.

An official said that the increase in the fare had been effected only in select routes.
