Food for thought: Noon meal for the students of Subbiah Vidyalayam in Thoothukudi is now prepared in a hygienic manner.

To maintain high hygiene standards of the food served under nutritious noon meal scheme and make eating at school a pleasant experience, Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls’ Higher Secondary School here has set up a modern kitchen with all new facilities on a 5,000 square feet area.

The management had spent ₹59 lakh for the modern kitchen which served food to 705 students every day on an average, though only 670 students had enrolled under the noon meal scheme, Headmistress M.S. Santhiny Kausel said.

This was because of the good quality of the food, which included tomato rice and egg as per the noon meal schedule, with the addition of curd rice, for which the school management bore the expenses.

The spacious dining hall adjacent to the kitchen could accommodate 800 children at a time. The ambience of the dining hall and the quality of food had ensured that the students did not skip their lunch as many did earlier. The school admitted boys in the primary level.

The project was conceptualized by school president D. Ganesan keeping in mind the health of the underprivileged children, Ms. Kausel said.
