K. Pudur is just a stone’s throw away from the office of Commissioner of Police. But it lacks proper traffic regulation what with the narrow stretch of Alagarkoil Road between ITI bus stop and Karpaga Nagar having all sorts of elements hindering free traffic flow.
This 500-metre stretch is dotted with banks, ATMs, Corporation market, urban primary health centre, Corporation office, bus terminus and eateries. The primary problem in this stretch is haphazard parking of vehicles on both sides of the road.
Not only two-wheelers, even four-wheelers are parked in a disorderly manner.
This often eats up the carriageway, thus causing traffic snarls needlessly.
Stopping buses and mini buses on the middle of the road at bus stops, particularly off Pudur bus terminus, is another major reason that hinders free flow of traffic. At least a score of autorickshaws are seen parked at the Pudur bus stop where buses bound for Alagarkoil stop, forcing buses to stop on the middle of the road.
It is worse during peak hours when children come out in large numbers.
Good move
The police have solved a major problem by shifting the ITI bus stop - for buses proceeding towards Alagarkoil. Earlier, the entire width of the road was blocked when two buses from opposite directions stop at the bus stops located bang opposite each other.
Few roadside vendors and a couple of used two-wheeler dealers also pose hindrance to road users as they occupy the carriageway by permanently parking their vehicles for sale.
Bins on margins
The Corporation also contributes to the encroachments by placing dumper bins on the road margins.
The road has another major bottleneck at Madhakoil Main Road junction where the road which was dug up for repairing drinking water pipeline remains unpaved for several months.
While precious carriageway is gobbled up in the form of encroachments, the huge space at the Pudur bus terminus remains under-utilised by buses and it is predominantly used for parking four-wheelers.
