Team reviews progress of poll roll works in Tuticorin

A team visited Tuticorin on Friday and reviewed the progress in electoral roll works. The officials T.C.Kom, under secretary and Sheesh Ram, section officer from Election Commission of India reviewed the progress of electoral roll works at a meeting attended by representatives of all political parties.

The parliamentary constituency of Tuticorin comprises six Assembly constituencies. Draft electoral roll for 20l6 poll rolls was published on September 15 this year comprising a total electorate of 13,39,354 including 6,63,559 men electors, 6,75,750 woman electors and 45 other electors. During special camps conducted in all constituencies, 17, 999 electors were deleted and 19,357 new electors were included in continuous updation of electoral rolls from January 5 to September 15, Collector and District Election Officer M. Ravikumar said.

Various electoral registration awareness activities were conducted to enrol all eligible persons in the electoral rolls. Twenty two awareness hoardings and 3,000 awareness posters were displayed and 26,000 awareness pamphlets were distributed. Besides, 13 rallies and 11 human chain programmes were conducted across the district. Competitions at colleges and schools were also conducted besides street corner shows organised to raise awareness about voter enrolment.

Scrolls requesting public to enrol as electors was continuously displayed on local telelvision channels. Propaganda using autorickshaws was conducted at 19 places. Several meetings at colleges and training were conducted for online registration. To encourage enrolment of women in electoral rolls, members of self help groups in 12 blocks had been motivated. Further, the Collector said 1,170 online petitions and 51,522 applications totalling up to 52,692 applications had been received for summary revision. Form 6 numbering 38,089 seeking inclusion of names, 4,227 form -7 for deletion of names, 7,309 form-8 and 3,066 form 8 A for transposition of names had been received and entered in the electoral rolls. Bar code stickers had been printed and pasting is under process. After scanning, the applications would be handed over to the booth-level officers and after verification, multilayer checking would be conducted by the supervisors, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers and EROs, he added.
