Members of schoolteachers’ associations staged an agitation here on Wednesday, demanding safety and security for them and urged the State government to enact special legislation similar to what was done for doctors’ safety.

In response to a State-wide protest call, the Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers’ Association (TNGTA) and Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Postgraduate Teachers’ Association staged the demonstration in front of Corporation Ponmudiar Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Goripalayam.

S. Murugan, district secretary, TNGTA, said in the wake of physical attacks, teachers felt insecure and it was high time steps were taken to prevent assaults on teachers by parents and the public.

R. Prabhakaran, State organising secretary of PG Teachers’ Association, said teachers would not be able to discharge their duties effectively and to their conscience if they worked under a sense of fear. “If teachers don’t have power to control students, it will affect the future of their students. The State government should take efforts to provide protection for teachers,” he said.

P. Saravana Murugan, district president, TNGTA, spoke.
