The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has directed the Dean of Government Rajaji Hospital here to appoint two independent forensic doctors to conduct a re-postmortem.
Hearing the petition of G. Mariammal of Virudhunagar district, Justice S.S. Sundar issued the direction. The petitioner sought a re -post mortem of the body of her husband, who she alleged had died under mysterious circumstances. She said in her petition that her husband Gnanasekar, a daily wage worker, had left home with his friends on November 20 and did not return home. However, the Sattur police had informed at the house of one Thilagaraj, who had gone with her husband, that they were apprehended on a charge of sand theft.
Later, Vachakarapatti police informed that the bodies of her husband and Thilagaraj had been kept at the Government Hospital in Virudhunagar. She alleged that there were injury marks on the bodies of her husband and his friend.
She was informed by the friends of her husband that he and Thilagaraj were apprehended by the police while they were excavating river sand and the others had managed to escape. Neither the police nor the doctors had provided them with the post mortem report. A complaint had, however, been lodged against her husband and Thilagaraj.
The petitioner suspected that this could be a case of custodial death. The guidelines for conducting post mortem were not followed.
The petitioner said a re-postmortem would throw light on circumstances under which her husband might have died.
