Madurai Sub-Inspectors happy on promotion, unhappy over transfer

Getting officially promoted as Sub-Inspector of Police after putting in three decades of service in Madurai city police had been a dream for many. However, for 15 of them, it has been not without an iota of disappointment.

After undergoing training for 63 days in Virudhunagar and practical training in various police stations, when 46 SIs were getting ready to don the new role, only 30 of them got their postings in the city, while 15 have been posted in Virudhunagar district.

“Having discharged all my duty in the city in the last 33 years, I have been used to city pattern of police work. My family too has been used to the city life. But, suddenly, 15 of us have been put in another district at the age of 53 plus years,” said one of the SIs.

All the fifteen of them want the City police administration to accommodate them in the existing vacancies of over 20 posts reserved for directly-recruited SIs in the city.

“This is not any major violation. In fact, out of the 40 per cent quota for promoted officials in the post of Inspectors of Police all the posts have been filled with directly-recruited Sub-Inspectors on promotion,” he added.

They also feel punished on promotion by way of getting reduced take home pay. “On being posted in Virudhunagar we stand to lose over Rs. 1,200 every month in the form of house rent allowance and city compensatory allowance,” another SI complained.
