Nirupama Rajapaksa, cousin of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on Tuesday visited the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here along with her husband Thirukkumaran Nadesan.
She offered her prayers at the shrines of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar during her visit, which lasted over than half-hour. She is a Member of the Parliament from the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and was sworn in as a MP in November 2005.
Tight security was provided to her with a heavy deployment of police personnel. Security became a matter of concern after black flags were waved by cadres of Marumalarichi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and activists of Sri Lankan Tamil Protection Movement during her private visit to Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple on Monday at Rameswaram.
