Manithaneya Makkal Katchi submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday seeking the resumption of monthly assistance for over 50 speech and hearing impaired persons living in five villages of Maanur block.

Its east district secretary S. Milleth Ismail said 30 persons from Kurichikulam and 20 from Therkkupatti, Ettankulam and Thirumalapuram, who were getting Rs.1,000 every month from the government, had been left in the lurch as the assistance was stopped three months ago. The Collector should intervene in the matter and help these poor people.

Patta transfer

On behalf of Kamarajar Samooha Nala Peravai, N. Nattramizhan alias Dhakshinamoorthy submitted a petition seeking proper enquiry into irregularities in the transfer of ‘patta’ of over 300 acres of land at Alangulam under Paapaankulam village panchayat in Nanguneri taluk. He said the ‘patta’ of these lands had been transferred with the connivance of officials in the name of a few anti-social elements of the area.

“They threaten farmers, the rightful owners of these lands, to vacate their ranches immediately though they had not sold these properties to anyone. If the situation is allowed to continue, it will lead to a clash between farmers and these elements,” he said.

“Irregularities”

A group of villagers from Therkkupatti under Maanur block submitted a petition alleging financial irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme. They said that a team of officials, who audited the accounts of the MNREGP on August 2, 2016, had unearthed “misappropriation of funds” at Therkkupatti.

“Besides including the names of his family members in the list of labourers hired for this scheme, the panchayat president has added the names of a good number of people, who are living in Palayamkottai and other places to illegally draw the wages. So, the Collector should initiate action against those who are responsible for the financial irregularity,” said the villagers.

Bus service

A group of school children from Bethanypuram near Moontradaippu submitted a petition to the Collector seeking adequate bus service to their village to connect the hamlet with Palayamkottai so that they could reach their institutions on time.

Remove sand

Members of ‘Satta Panchayat Iyakkam’ submitted a petition urging the officials to remove the sand accumulated along roads causing accidents including fatal ones. They said the sand accumulated near CSI Cathedral at Murugankurichi that was causing accidents everyday, had claimed the life of a woman recently. The Collector should instruct the workers concerned to remove the sand and lay paver blocks along the roadside as it would avoid accumulation of sand there. They also urged the officials to install sign boards along roads especially on medians and on sharp turns to avoid accidents.

Independence day

The ‘Nellai District Pothunala Amaippu’ submitted a petition appealing to the Collector to organise the Independence Day celebrations at VOC Stadium instead of conducting the events either at Anna Stadium or at Armed Reserve Police ground.
