The mother of a boy from TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School here, who drowned along with his father in Tirunelveli district on May 11, 2017, received the insurance settlement of ₹ 6 lakh from United India Insurance Company on the school premises here on Monday.

The incident occurred when N. Lakshminarasimman (50) of Balaji Nagar here, who was working as a Professor in a private engineering college, his wife L. Jayashree (41), and sons L. Nandagopal (17) and L. Badrinath (13) visited the Thirukkurunkudi Nambi Temple.

Nandagopal, who entered the Nambiyaru river near the temple, was caught in a whirlpool. Both the boy and Lakshminarasimman, who ventured into the river to save his son, met a watery grave.

N. Rangarajan, Senior Divisional Manager, UIIC, Division I, Madurai, said that Nandagopal was covered in a Group Personal Accident Policy, taken by students of all schools coming under TVS Lakshmi Vidya Sangham by paying a meagre premium of just around ₹ 100 per annum.

He said that the insurance policy covered a claim of ₹ 3 lakh in the unfortunate incident of death and medical expenses and compensations in case of accidents.

“Importantly, the policy also covered ₹ 3 lakh if the earning parent of a child died so that the child’s education is not affected. In this particular case, Nandagopal and his brother Badrinath were insured. So, ₹ 3 lakh was settled for Nandagopal’s death and another ₹ 3 lakh to Badrinath for the death of Lakshminarasimman,” he said.

Stating that the policy helped in meeting medical expenses of school children, who were prone to injuries while participating in sport and other activities, he said that the firm would be happy to offer the policy for more schools if they were interested.

The cheque was handed over to Ms. Jayashree in the presence of S.Venkata Narayanan, secretary,TVS Lakshmi Vidya Sangham, in the presence of M. Ramesh, Principal, and M. Krishnamoorthi, Deputy Manager, UIIC.
