Conservancy workers, affiliated to the CITU, laid siege to the Corporation office here on Thursday demanding speedy settlement of wage arrears.
“When the court had directed the Corporation to look into our demands and settle wages speedily, the officials have not implemented it,” S. Vijayan, CITU president, said.
In the last conciliatory meeting presided over by Collector, it was decided to give ₹320 for daily wagers in the corporation. However, it was not implemented.
The Corporation had 700 workers in the conservancy wing under permanent rolls. In the next four to five years, many would reach superannuation.
They also demanded remittance of wages through bank, to provide PF, ESI as many of them were serving for over 300 days. After the Corporation expanded its wards from 72 to 100, conservancy workers were hired on contract and paid daily wages at the added wards. Since then, there have been allegations that they were not paid properly.
