The Vice-Chancellor designate of Madurai Kamaraj University, Kalyani Mathivanan, has told a team of varsity Syndicate members that she has no other commitment except to serve the MKU with full devotion.

A team of Syndicate members and also the university Registrar in-charge M. Rajiakodi met her at Chennai and briefed her about the current priorities of the varsity.

She is expected to assume charge as Vice-Chancellor here on April 10 before which she would call on the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to express thanks for the responsibility bestowed upon her.

“Dr.Kalyani Mathivanan is already prepared mentally on what to do as VC. She enquired from us about the priorities, projects and regular activities,” P. Gunasekaran, university Syndicate member, told The Hindu after meeting the Vice-Chancellor designate.

The Syndicate member said that the new VC, who is the daughter-in-law of former Tamil Nadu Minister V. R. Nedunchezhian, will be the varsity's first women Vice-Chancellor, has committed herself to devote hundred per cent to the university because she said “I have no other commitment except doing good for the university where my father also was the Vice-Chancellor.”

Dr. Gunasekaran has said that they had briefed her about the National Assessment and Accreditation Council re-accreditation, Twelfth Plan preparations and the University with Potential for Excellence projects to be done immediately.

Dr. Kalyani Mathivanan, Professor and Head of Department of English at Ethiraj College for Women in Chennai, was appointed as Vice-Chancellor on Saturday and she received the order from Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah.

“From our meeting with her, we could observe that she will take good and quick decisions. We have assured our fullest cooperation to her in making the university a top class institution,” the Syndicate members said. Senior varsity officials who met her at Chennai include Dr. Gunasekaran, ‘Agri' K. P. T. Ganesan, M. Rajiakodi, P. T. Manoharan and P. Chelladurai.

University staff, both teaching and non-teaching, have been anxiously waiting for the arrival of Dr. Kalyani Mathivanan because the university has been headless since April last year and important policy decisions could not be taken.
