Seek report from police, HC tells mahila court

July 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:05 am IST - MADURAI:

Judicial magistrates should not stop with issuing directions to the police to register First Information Reports (FIRs). They should follow up their directions until final reports were filed by the investigating agency, the Madras High Court Bench here has said.

Justice P. Devadass, dealing with a petition filed by K. Natarajan accusing his son-in-law of having murdered his daughter, said: “The S.S. Colony Police here had not registered an FIR though an Additional Mahila Court had on June 2 found a prima facie case of commission of cognisable offences and issued a specific direction to register the case.” He directed the the mahila court to call for a report from the police on the action taken pursuant to the order to register an FIR.
