Sanitary workers of the civic body staged a demonstration on the Corporation office premises here on Wednesday.

They said services of temporary, casual and contract workers must be regularised, and threatened to go on a total strike in Madurai on August 13 if their demands were not met by then. Regularising the service of daily wage workers and contract employees, scrapping of private contracts in the Corporation, paying Rs.5 lakh as compensation in the event of a sanitary worker’s death, providing provident fund and pension benefits and disbursing State government’s educational assistance to the children of sanitary workers were their main demands.

“The civic body never bothers about our welfare though our services are important to maintain the city’s cleanliness and sanitation. The authorities must redress our grievances before August 13 in accordance with the preliminary talks we had with officials on July 17,” the workers said.
