High Court-appointed Legal Commissioner U. Sagayam on Monday enquired with officials of the Revenue and Public Works Department about encroachments and damage caused to waterbodies and irrigation channels due to illegal granite mining.

Besides Revenue Divisional Officer (Madurai) Senthil Kumari, Tahsildar and PWD engineers explained to him the extent of damage by using maps. Mr. Sagayam had sought more details on encroachments, the extent of damage and the action taken to curb the illegal activity, sources said.

A total of 224 petitions have so far been received by the one-man committee. Among them were complaints of land grab, encroachment, illegal granite quarrying and encroachment on panchami land.
