As the new academic year is set to begin soon, various universities in Russia are conducting campaigns to attract students from the southern districts for admission to medicine, engineering and other courses.
The Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai conducted free counselling campaigns in Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and other places on Sunday.
Representatives of Study Abroad Educational Consultants have been deputed by the consulate to explain to the students and their parents the climatic conditions of the regions, and fee structure, hostel facilities and various courses offered by universities.
C.Suresh Babu, Director, Study Abroad, said Russian universities had started admission process for overseas students for engineering, medical, graduate and postgraduate programmes for 2013-14. “We represent all universities in Russia and based on the student intake requirement, the admissions are being done. In the awareness camps, the students will register their particulars and they have to come to the consulate in Chennai for further procedures. Classes will start in September,” he said.
There are enquiries about admissions in Russia and the final process would be carried out after the Plus Two results are declared.
A press release from the Cultural Department of Russian Consulate said fee structure ranged from $1,700 to $4,000 a year in the case of Russian medium of instruction. For English medium, the fee would be from $2,500 to $6,000.
The students have to pay the fees directly to the university. The fees include tuition fee, hostel accommodation fee and the cost of study material.
Russian medical universities offer MD degree which is equivalent to MBBS degree in India. The Medical Council of India recognises nine medical universities of Russia in Moscow, Tver, Volgograd, Stavropol and Rostov. Duration of the medical course is six years in English medium.
Mr. Babu said the consulate was organising a mega admission fair at the Russian Centre in Alwarpet in Chennai on May 18 and 19.
There were no pre-qualifying exams for admission to universities in Russia and admissions were based on the 12th standard marks for bachelor degree programmes, he added.
There will be Russian language classes for the students who select English as medium of instruction.
