As part of the Central Nest project of the Rotary Club of Madurai Central, newly constructed houses were given to eight visually-challenged people and their families at Sakkimangalam on Friday.
“Eight houses were given in 2009 and six in 2011 to visually challenged people under this project,” said S.L.Sethumadava, coordinator of the third phase of the project. “The beneficiaries earn a meagre income of Rs.100 a day. With the support of Rotarians and generous donors, we have been able to give them a house,” he said, and added that the State Government had given the land.
The chief guest, V.R.Muthu , praised the efforts of the Rotarians and their commitment to serve society. The donors were honoured by the beneficiaries.
“The fact that projects like these are rare and the beneficiaries can enjoy benefits without any hitch prompted me to help towards this cause,” said H.Kannan, a donor.
Echoing his sentiments, N.Murugesan, civil engineer of the project, said, “The fact that I’m using my skill to do something charitable for the deserving gives me immense satisfaction.”
