A six-member gang robbed an aged couple of 16 sovereigns of gold jewellery after tying them in a coconut tree near their house at Vaithyarthottam near Pasumpon in the district on Wednesday.

Police said N Siraimeetan (68), a retired driver of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, who was living with his wife in the isolated house at the coconut grove on the way to Kamudhi, came out of the house in the morning, when the gang members struck.

After tying him and his wife Mangaleswari, an employee of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) in a tree, the gang members, who covered their faces with kerchief, took away the jewellery, including thali chain and bangles. They did not carry any weapon and they spoke in Tamil, police said.

The gang members had visited the house on Tuesday evening on the pretext of buying banana trees and conducted a dry run, police said. They also too away two cell phones, police said. Senior police officials visited the house and launched an investigation, police added.
