Shopkeepers and passers-by on South Avani Moola Street did not notice anything unusual when robbers took away valuables on Saturday.

Vasu (61), a jewellery shop owner who gave a hot chase, said: “I heard someone yelling but a few minutes later, I saw three men running out of the shop. I pursued the gang along with another fruit vendor on my scooter. At New Cinema theatre area, the robbers brandished their guns and we could not proceed further,” he added.

Police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Samanth Rohan Rajendra, carried out investigations. Fingerprint and scientific experts inspected the shop.

“The police recovered a country-made gun and a knife from the gang members, aged around 20. The gang is said to have come here recently and carried out reconnaissance in the locality,” Mr. Rajendra told The Hindu . The South Gate police have registered a case following a complaint lodged by R.M. Rengarajan, owners of the shop.

Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur rewarded seven persons, including six police men and Panju, a fruit seller, for bravery in nabbing the accused.
