Around 15,000 volunteers, including students of various educational institutions and voluntary organisations, participated in the second phase of cleaning of the Tamirabarani riverbed in parts of the district on Saturday.

Collector Sandeep Nanduri inaugurated the clean-up in front of Collectorate. The 60-km drive was launched from Papanasam and went on to a bridge near four-way bypass road here. The Collector after inspecting Manimurtheeswarar Kovil, Udayarpatti and Sindhupoondurai, said the first phase of the drive was taken up from Karuppanthurai to Vannarapettai river bridge under the Corporation limits here.

He said the drive would be organised every month in various parts of the district. Encroachments identified on the riverbed were being removed as per the directions of the High Court, he added.
