Theme-based cleanliness drives would begin at the Madurai Railway Junction and the associated establishments from October 11, said Sunil Kumar Garg, Divisional Railway Manager, here on Friday.
Mr. Garg flagged off the Swacch Bharat rally organised by the Railway Divisional Office on occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi.
“The Swacch Bharat programme was launched exactly a year ago at the Madurai Railway Junction and the awareness drive created a sense of responsibility among passengers, most importantly children. To further this, the railway board instructed all general managers to carry out theme-based campaigns for the same till March next,” he said.
The cleanliness drive will focus on specific sectors of the railways, and will begin with the Sardar Patel United Clean India Drive from October 11 to 31, which will focus on railway stations and trains.
This will be followed by cleanliness drives and awareness programmes at railway colonies from December 16 to 31 and railway hospitals as well as health units from February 14 to 28.
The programme will also be taken to workshops, offices, service buildings and other work places from February 28 to March 15.
The overall aim of this campaign is to bring in systematic changes which will lead to sustained improvement across the sectors with a lot more involvement from the staff and users of the railways, Mr. Garg noted.
He said that the programme would be implemented through awareness seminars as well as innovatively staged skits and performances and hoardings and public announcements in the railway stations.
At the Madurai Railway Station, volunteers from the Sociology and Social Work Department of Fatima College performed a skit and put up a cultural performance on the importance of cleanliness.
