Public support sought against INO project

March 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - MADURAI:

Social activist Medha Patkar and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko addressed roadside meetings at several places on Sunday, seeking public support to stop India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) project.

Speaking at Chekkanoorani, en route to the project site at Pottipuram in Theni district, Ms. Patkar said people had the right to raise questions about the “life-threatening” project. “Moreover, the project will require two lakh litres of water a day when it becomes operational. Is it possible in that area?” she asked.

Objecting to the manner in which clearances were given to the project by the Central government, Ms. Patkar wondered whether the INO was a research project, as claimed by scientists.

Mr. Vaiko said such a disastrous project should not be implemented in the guise of development.

Similar meetings were held at Chellampatti, Karumathur and Usilampatti.
