With the students’ protests over the Sri Lankan issue not dying down, the city police were on their toes on Wednesday giving protection to all the important Central government offices.

A large number of police personnel were posted at the Income Tax office, BSNL offices, Employees Provident Fund Office, All India Radio office and important bank premises.

The police are wary about the students’ protests in the recent days when they laid siege to the banks and BSNL office and pulled down a Congress party flag pole. However, the students did not turn up at those offices till evening.

Later, 40 college students took out a motorcycle rally from the District Court Complex to Periyar Bus Stand through Teppakulam. The students removed the name board of a loadmen association that had images of Congress leaders Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi on Kamaraj Salai. The students raised slogans demanding to lift ban on Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam and seeking independent international probe into the war crimes in Sri Lanka. The agitators condemned the Centre and wanted it to desist from making attempts to help the island nation on the issue.

They also condemned the attack on Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.
