A demonstration condemning untouchability was staged by Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front in front of the Collectorate in Madurai on Monday.

A. Kathir, executive director of Evidence, and C. Murugesan and Muthukrishnan, members of Campaign Against Untouchability, a social organisation, addressed the gathering. The protestors demanded that the State government must form committees comprising professors, advocates and social activists in each district to organise campaigns in villages to abolish the practice of untouchability.

Social interaction meetings should be organised in villages where untouchability was prevalent, they insisted. They urged the government to initiate legal action against police officials who did not implement the SC and ST Tribe (prevention of atrocities) Act.

Special courts should be constituted in all the districts to hear cases under the SC and ST Act, they said.
