Proposal to hike fees in Meenakshi temple flayed

October 04, 2010 04:26 pm | Updated 04:26 pm IST - MADURAI:

The Tamil Nadu Hindu Aalaya Paadhukaapu Kuzhu – a forum to protect temples in Tamil Nadu – has strongly condemned the proposal to hike marriage and darshan fees at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

The meeting, which was presided, by forum's State general secretary P. Sundara Vadivel was attended by members from various Hindu outfits including the Hindu Munnani, BJP and ABVP.

According to a press release issued here on Sunday, the members objected to the fee hike for conducting marriages in the Meenakshi temple. A resolution was passed asking the temple administration to withdraw the proposal forthwith and respect the sentiments of the devotees.

Similarly, the proposal to hike special darshan fee too should be withdrawn in the larger public interest.

The administration should take steps to recover arrears due to the temple from various sources and not tax the common man.

A delegation would submit a memorandum to the temple administration on October 6 in this connection, the release said.
