Prices dip owing to heavy arrivals

While prices of jasmine shot up to Rs. 2,800 a kg in late November, the flower was sold at Rs 150 a kg on Tuesday at the Mattuthavani Flower Market in the city. Vendors said that the prices had further dipped a couple of days back to Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 per kg which was the lowest price in the last four months.

“Heavy arrivals from Ilyarpatti and parts of Dindigul have resulted in the prices crashing over the last 10 days or so. There have been close to five tonnes of jasmine brought to the market in the last few days,” said P. Vijayan, a jasmine flower vendor.

Stating that he expected the flower to not fetch more than Rs. 180 a kg in the next few days, he said that the prices would only increase after a week when the wedding season began and demand became high.

L. Poomari, a flower seller near the Mattuthavani market ,said that the dip in prices had benefitted sellers like her who sold strung flowers.

“Many women have heard that the prices have dipped and are coming to buy,” she said. Most other flowers selling at extremely low rates has affected a few farmers who bring the flowers they cultivate for sale there.

S. Azhagi, who cultivates ‘Samandhi’ flowers in her land in Senthurai near Natham, said that they had not made profits in the last few days as flowers were selling at low rates of around Rs. 40 per kg.
