After weeks of respite, power cuts are back in the city to haunt its residents. Several areas had been witnessing power outage from 15 minutes to two hours, complained residents.
“We experienced power cut twice on Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and from 12 noon to 12.30 p.m.,” said R. Chandra, a resident of Iyer Bungalow. “We have no issues if the supply is interrupted in the noon. People getting ready for work in the morning are put to hardship due to erratic power supply,” she also added.
A. Bhaskara Chinna Raja, who runs a bakery at Kannanendal, claimed that power supply was interrupted in the area for two hours from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday. “On Wednesday, power went off twice for half an hour. Production work comes to an abrupt halt when power is cut and we find it difficult to carry on with our business,” he rued.
Residents of Tiruppalai said they faced power cut for two hours from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., whereas residents of Tirunagar said there was no power from 8.15 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
A resident of Ayyavu Thevar Nagar, S. Kanagavalli, said power went off four to five times in the area in the past two days. “The duration of power interruption ranges from 10 minutes to two hours. Whenever power goes off, we are clueless as to when it will come back. There is power cut even at nights,” she complained.
Residents of Ellis Nagar and Ponnagaram said the power cuts were unscheduled and supply remained interrupted for 15 minutes several times a day.
However, officials of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) maintained that wind power generation was good and there was no load shedding.
“In the past three days, power generated with wind energy was between 2500 MW and 3500 MW. The demand for electricity also has reduced in the recent days. Therefore, there was no load shedding in most places,” said an official. “Only on rare occasions, power supply was interrupted in a few areas for half an hour to one hour,” the official further said.
