Police are relying on closed circuit televisions (CCTV) fitted in 200 sites in the city to track the vehicles used by the suspects in the murder of DMK functionary ‘Pottu’ Suresh.
The DMK’s south zone organizing secretary M. K. Alagiri’s close aide was hacked to death by a gang in the thickly populated Jaihindpuram area on Thursday night, when he was returning home in his luxury car a fancy registration number 6789.
Police officers said that the CCTV footage had given good leads.
They told The Hindu that Suresh, who had travelled from Poriyalar Nagar via Narayanapuram, had reached Jaihindpuram Main Road and passed through the market area and finally entered the Murugan Koil Main Road, where the murder took place.
The footage showed a goods carrier trailing Suresh's car over a significant distance. According to police, the vehicle may have been carrying the lungi-clad assailants, some of whom wore monkey caps.
Check-posts have been put on alert to look out for the four-wheeler and two-wheeler involved in the incident. Meanwhile, police teams have fanned out to locations in the southern districts to gather information based on the CCTV footage, officers said.
CCTVs were installed in the city last year as part of a drive to track down over speeding vehicles, drivers using mobile phones and eve-teasing offenders. Bus-stops and public parks in the city are targets of surveillance.
