The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday wanted to know the State Government’s stand on a public interest litigation petition seeking a direction to display Tirukkural couplets along with their explanations in government buses and offices.
A Division Bench of Justices M. Jaichandren and R. Mahadevan directed a government counsel to obtain instructions from the Chief Secretary within a fortnight and said that it might ask the petitioner to bear the expenses if the government agrees to his demand.
Wondering how it would be possible to write down explanations for the couplets on government buses and offices, Mr. Justice Jaichandren asked the petitioner’s counsel to be ready with the money, which would be required for the purpose, during the next hearing of the case.
SP.D. Karuppiah, president of Bharathi Rights Association based at Karaikudi in Sivaganga district, had filed the PIL petition.
He claimed that no layman would be able to understand the meaning of the couplets displayed in government buses and offices without a description appended to them.
