Ex-Minister Senthil Balaji has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking permission to conduct a public meeting and sports events at Thiruvalluvar Maithanam in Karur as part of MGR birth centenary celebrations.

He said that sports and cultural events would be conducted from January 14 to 18 and the public meeting would be held on January 18 at the Thiruvalluvar Maithanam. People had been enrolling for the sports events and prizes would be distributed to the winners, he said.

He said T.T.V. Dhinakaran, the newly elected MLA from R.K. Nagar Constituency, would deliver a speech and distribute prizes.

Mr. Senthil Balaji said that he had sought permission from the Commissioner of Karur Municipality for the conduct of the meeting at the said venue, where public meetings usually take place. He said he had given an undertaking to pay rent for the venue.

However, the Commissioner had not responded to the representation made. Necessary arrangements had to be made at the venue prior to the event and delay would result in loss, he said.

Hearing the petition, a division bench of Justices M.Sathyanarayanan and R.Hemalatha adjourned the case to January 9.
