Police raid in search of some criminals last week in few villages in the district had led to widespread protests among people who charged that police beat up some women and children besides damaging properties in their houses.

According to complaints lodged with Muthukulathur police, seven women were injured in the alleged attack by police during the searches in Manipuram, Pallappacheri and Pottakulam villages on January two.

The raids were conducted following violence by two groups of people. Police had registered cases against 25 persons in connection with the incident and conducted searches for them.

Government Hospital sources at Muthukulathur said that eight women had been admitted to hospital with injuries suffered allegedly due to the attack.

Police said they had conducted raids in the villages as some of the anti-social elements who instigated communal violence last week were hiding in the villages and arrested eight persons. However, they denied reports of attack during the searches.
