V. Karuppasamy (56), president of Karseri panchayat, who was attacked by an armed gang on Friday night, succumbed to injuries here on Saturday.
Madurai rural police said that the victim died after treatment failed.
Investigations suggested that the eviction drive carried out in the village two days ago had triggered the attack on Karuppasamy.
Key suspect detained
A senior police officer said that they had detained the key suspect behind the crime and were on the lookout for nine others.
Meanwhile, relatives of Karuppasamy, who assembled in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital, refused to receive the body after post-mortem. They demanded the arrest of the killers.
However, after persuasion by police officers, they dispersed.
Amid tight security, the body was taken to his native.
Pickets have been posted in and around Silaiman to ensure that there was no untoward incident.
Youth kidnapped, rescued swiftly
A 24-year-old youth Kartik, son of Vasukinathan, who runs a private dairy farm, was kidnapped by a person from the Maatuthavani integrated bus stand.
As the victim secretly passed on the message to his father from his hand phone, the Anna Nagar police alerted all check-posts and within an hour, the kidnap drama ended.
It is said that business rivalry between the youth’s father and another person led to the offence.
The police seized the vehicle and detained the suspect. Further investigation is on.
