The much-awaited overbridge which was constructed across the Kottakudi River at an estimated cost of ₹ 2.62 crore near Poodhipuram was thrown open for public use here on Wednesday.

After inaugurating the bridge here on Wednesday, Collector N. Venkatachalam said that people, especially farmers would immensely benefit from this. The bridge would connect Poodhipuram, Valaiyapatti, Manjinaickanpatti, Koppurenganpatti, Vaazhathupatti and nearby villages with Bodi-Theni Highway. It would be easy for farmers to transport vegetables and other agricultural commodities to wholesale markets in the town from their villages. Earlier, villagers had to travel eight kilometres to reach the Bodi-Theni National Highway. After construction of the bridge, their travel distance got reduced to just three kilometres, he added.

Rasingapuram village panchayat was taking a lead in disposal of wastes among village panchayats in the district.

It had spent ₹90,000 for setting up a vermicompost yard and invested ₹3.27 lakh for erecting a processing shed and commissioning shredding machine. The MGNREGS workers were also roped in for processing work wastes. Residents were taught to segregate wastes and asked to hand it over to sanitary workers every day morning.

The panchayat has been making revenue through sale of organic manure and vermicompost. Non-biodegradable wastes were also recycled safely.

Besides, several schemes were being implemented in the panchayat as it was adopted by Theni MP R. Parthiban under the rural village development scheme in his constituency.

Later Mr. Venkatachalam inspected green houses constructed at T. Sindhalaiserry in Uthamaplayam block.
