Witnessed by thousands of devotees, the kumbhabishekam of the Subramaniaswamy Temple at Tirupparankundram near here was performed here on Monday.
The first of the six (‘Arubadai') holy abodes for Lord Murugan, the consecration was being performed after nearly 11 years. The last consecration of the temple was performed on June 11, 2000. Madurai has the distinction of hosting two of the six holy abodes with the Alagarkoil being the other one in the district.
According to R. Sendil Velavan, Deputy Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department and Executive Officer of the temple, the consecrations were performed at around 6.45 a.m. The event was witnessed by over 50,000 people as the Tirupparankundram was submerged under a tidal wave of devotees.
S.P Shanmuganathan, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, M. Muthiah Kalaivanan, HR and CE Commissioner, U. Sagayam, Collector, and Asra Garg, Madurai Superintendent of Police, took part in the event along with most of the MLAs from Madurai district.
P. Dhanapal, Joint Commissioner (Head Quarters - Renovation), HR&CE Department, R. Sudarshan, Joint Commissioner (Madurai Region), HR&CE Department and P. Jayaraman, Executive Officer of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, also witnessed the event.
