A 66-year-old woman was cheated of four sovereigns of gold by a trickster on Alagarkoil Road near Pudur on Monday.

The victim, I. Peer Begam, was approached by a man with “officer-like” look. He advised the woman not to wear gold jewellery in view of the crowd for festival shopping.

After putting the chain in her purse he handed over it to her. When she put the purse in a big-shopper, the man again cautioned her claiming that the open bag was not safe.

He then helped to tie the mouth of the bag and left the scene. A little later, when the woman tried to take money at the market, she found the purse missing.

The Anna Nagar police have registered a case.
