“To remain competent, keep abreast of developments in your field and hone skills,” said Rohini Sridhar, Chief Operating Officer of Apollo Speciality Hospital, to nursing students.

She was addressing the students of TVS Community College during their lamp lighting ceremony on the college premises here on Thursday. Sixty-two nursing students who are pursuing one-year and two-year programmes took part in the ceremony.

Dr. Rohini spoke about the life of Florence Nightingale, who helped people during the Crimean war, and how the nursing profession evolved over the years.

“Patients used to see her lamplight and feel happy. She brought dignity and recognition to the nursing profession. Even now, caring nurses are remembered by patients long after they get discharged from hospitals,” she said.

Dr. Rohini lit the lamps of all the nursing students who had their professional caps put on by Selvi Santhosham, Administrative Head of Lakshmi Vidya Sangham, TVS Schools. They took a pledge to practise sincerity and dedication.

“While lighting the lamps, I was pleased to see the confidence on the face of nursing students and I am sure they will contribute a lot to the field of medicine and uphold the principles of the noble profession,” Dr. Rohini said.

Special guest P.K. Muthukumaraswamy said lighting of the lamp was a symbol of service and it should remain throughout their profession. “The constant mantra of every person in the medical profession should be to bring light to the lives of people,” the doctor said.

Col. V. Janakiraman, Correspondent, R. Srinivasan, Director, TVS Group of Schools, and Dr. Senthil Moorthy Murugesan spoke.
